Climate Policy Engagement Analysis

Climate Lobbying Overview: The Japan Society of Industrial Machinery Manufacturers (JSIM) appears to have limited recent engagements and have previously had mixed engagement with climate-related policy. The association generally supported emissions reductions in its top-line messaging, however it has opposed carbon taxes and has expressed mixed positions on transitioning the energy mix.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: JSIM appears broadly supportive of responding to climate change. In JSIM’s Sustainability Report published December 2023, they recognized the need for urgent action to combat climate change. In their Sustainability Action Plan published on their corporate website in December 2023, they promoted global warming countermeasures and climate neutrality targets.

Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: InfluenceMap has not found any recent evidence of JSIM’s engagement with climate-related regulations. Previously, JSIM had negative positions on carbon taxes and mixed positions on energy efficiency. In policy recommendations published on its website in May 2022, JSIM requested tax incentives and support for energy conservation investments.

Positioning on Energy Transition: JSIM appears to be broadly mixed in their positioning on the energy transition. In their Sustainability Report 2024 published in December 2024, and Sustainability Report 2023 published in December 2023, JSIM supported an increase in renewables in the energy mix, however, were unclear around the pace and extent of this increase as well as the need for policy to support the transition.

InfluenceMap collects and assesses evidence of corporate climate policy engagement on a weekly basis, depending on the availability of information from each specific data source (for more information see our methodology). While this analysis flows through to the company’s scores each week, the summary above is updated periodically. This summary was last updated in Q2 2025.
