Climate Policy Engagement Analysis
Climate Policy Engagement Overview: The World Steel Association (worldsteel) demonstrates active policy engagement that is partially aligned with policy pathways aiming to deliver the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. The association supported ambitious action to respond to climate change in its top-line messaging and is supportive of the decarbonization of the steel industry, with some exceptions. InfluenceMap did not detect engagement on specific climate regulations in 2023-25.
Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: worldsteel is supportive of ambitious climate action in its top-line messaging on climate policy. The association recognized the necessity of responding to climate change with global solutions on its website, accessed in May 2024. It also supported urgent action to decarbonize the steel sector to achieve net zero emissions in a September 2023 presentation. worldsteel supported the goals of the Paris Agreement in an April 2024 publication. InfluenceMap did not detect positions on the need for climate change regulation in 2023-2025.
Engagement with Climate-Related Policies: InfluenceMap detected limited engagement from worldsteel with climate-related policies in 2023-25. The association supported common GHG emissions standards for steel in the Steel Standards Principles Statement for COP29, published in November 2024.
Positioning on Energy Transition: The World Steel Association’s (worldsteel) position on the energy transition is mostly positive, although with some exceptions and ambiguities. In a December 2023 Bloomberg article, worldsteel stated that “the steel industry is committed to continuing to reduce the carbon emissions from its production processes” and supported a “faster development of enabling technologies, renewable energy and green hydrogen.” The association supported the increased use of steel scrap in electric arc furnaces to reduce GHG emissions from steel production in a blog post published in November 2024. However, the association appeared to support a high GHG emissions energy mix in a September 2023 presentation, advocating for a continued role for fossil gas without placing clear conditions on the need for CCS or methane emission abatement, and without specifying timelines for the transition that are aligned with IPCC guidance. In the same presentation, worldsteel appeared to support a continued role for coking coal. In a May 2024 post on X, the association broadly supported an increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, hydrogen and electricity in aviation, but did not provide details demonstrating the alignment of this position with IPCC guidance.
InfluenceMap collects and assesses evidence of corporate climate policy engagement on a weekly basis, depending on the availability of information from each specific data source (for more information see our methodology. While this analysis flows through to the company’s scores each week, the summary above is updated periodically. This summary was last updated in Q2 2025.
